Reiki in the Workplace

Being our best at work is what we all want - everyday. We spend most of our days AT work, so why not clear what we don’t need, rebalance our bodies and refresh and relax so we are prepared for Big Thinking and Creative Thought? That is where Reiki in the Workplace comes in….

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient healing technique which brings us back into a greater sense of balance: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It generates a sense of comfort, calm and peace. Reiki helps those who are addressing a wide range of health conditions such as headaches, insomnia, chronic pain, depression & anxiety. Importantly, Reiki safely combines with and supports any medical intervention. Reiki is neither a religion nor a massage. Reiki is administered by a certified practitioner. There is no physical manipulation; the practitioner’s hands remain still in a series of placements, given with light touch or no touch, at the recipient’s preference. It is safe and promotes relaxation.

Why at Work?

Why is Reiki an exceptional fit for Wellness in the Workplace? It works directly with the electromagnetic fields that surround and reside within our bodies. WIFI and screen time disrupt these electromagnetic fields (along with a host of other culprits) and Reiki literally addresses and can restore to health the exact physiological ailments that WIFI is said to dis-ease (i.e. heart rate, nervous system, blood cells and immune system, pressure and pain in the chest as well as our levels of anxiety). Screen time is also proven to contribute to eyestrain, blurred vision, headaches, neck and back pain, disrupt our circadian rhythms at night when we're trying to fall asleep as well as affect our brain functioning and development.

Reiki is being used in 100’s of hospitals in the USA including the Mayo Clinic, John’s Hopkins and The Cleveland Clinic (https://www.humanfrequencies.com/reiki-hospitals/). Boulder Community Hospital uses Reiki as part of their Support and Integrative Therapies Department. Longmont United Hospital offers Reiki as part of their Complementary Medicines and Kaiser Permanente provides education and access to this specific type of integrative care.

What an On Site Session Looks Like

Winged Heart Rooted Spirit will provide private Reiki sessions to your employees on your job site. We work individually with each client. Reiki sessions will be either weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or bi-monthly with 15-30 minute sessions, in a chair or massage table. All sessions are performed clothed, professional and confidential. The practitioner can either put their hands on or just above the client. It’s the discretion of the employee. Reiki treatments are individually tailored, allowing one person at a time to benefit from it.

Prerequisites to Conduct Reiki Treatments At Your Business

  • It is important to allocate a quiet space or room in the workplace where Reiki treatments can be conducted. (It is best for this room to be booked or reserved only for Reiki, preventing other people or noise from disturbing the sessions.)

  • The room should be big enough to encompass a massage table.

  • All cell phones and blackberries must be turned off or silenced during the session.

How Does Reiki Help?

We live in a BUSY world. In our busy-ness we are not only meeting deadlines, answering endless emails, sitting in meeting after meeting but we are asking ourselves to access our creativity and Big Thinking and be our healthiest selves! We need to maximize our days by optimizing what we do. The long term thinking is - if we do not provide a place and time for rebalancing and refreshing than we will get lost in our emails and our meetings because they NEVER STOP. In response to this, studies have been conducted to show Reiki, a Japanese form of hands on healing, can directly improve our health.

Imagine a time when your heart began to race and your chest tightened? Maybe you got a pit in your belly, you stopped breathing or you began to sweat a little. The body’s muscles tightened, preparing the body to respond.

This is your sympathetic nervous system at work, the ‘fight or flight” response. It’s designed to help us react when we are threatened. We feel the rush of adrenaline coursing through the body, primed to fight or flight or freeze.

The trouble is, our primal instinct does not distinguish very well. A caveman trying to outrun a saber tooth tiger had the same response you have to fifty-two unread emails in your inbox. The nervous system takes us hostage. Stress hormones flood the body. And since many of us are under constant stressors, the body never gets a chance to reset. This is where Reiki can play a crucial role.

During a Reiki treatment, our body begins to shift from the fight or flight response of our nervous system to the rest and restore mode, known as the parasympathetic nervous system. This is where the body can truly begin to heal, rebalance and restore. Imagine if we did this EVERY day or, in the least, once a week for 10-20 minutes?

Offering Reiki in your workplace is a way to provide this rebalancing, this reset button on the creative process or Big Thinking, and a way to relieve stress and anxiety.

What Can I Expect During a Reiki Session?

Reiki treatments generally take place in a wellness treatment room, similar to massage therapy or acupuncture. A full session will typically last one hour to 90 minutes.

You remain fully clothed for your Reiki treatment. During the session, the practitioner will use a series of hand placements to facilitate the movement and balancing of energy in the body and the chakras (the seven main energy centers in the body).

Most people feel relaxed and peaceful during a session and may even fall asleep. You may notice physical sensations, such as tingling, lightness or heaviness, or even visualize colors.  You may have an emotional release as Reiki is helping to clear energy from stress or past trauma. During the treatment, it can be beneficial to stay quiet in body and mind, to breathe fully and simply notice what comes up for you as receive the treatment.

While everyone’s response to Reiki is a little different, most people feel a state of deep relaxation, calm and peace. It can reset the nervous system by bringing in positive energy and helping us to release the negative energy and experiences that are stored in the body and mind.

Taking the time for healing is a powerful act of self-care. It can simply be about creating quiet time for yourself away from the stimuli that we are exposed to all day long. Reiki treatments are a place where we can soften, surrender and breathe. They can help to support your mentally, emotionally and physically and encourage a state of balance where wellness can thrive.
